Job Description

Animal Control Officer

Performs technical work in the enforcement of ordinances regulating the keeping of animals within the City, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under moderate supervision.

Examples of duties include:

• Receiving, investigating and answering complaints regarding stray, wild or owned animals that were reported at large, injured or abused.
• Patrolling streets or other locations to check for animals running at large, licenses and vaccinations.
• Rescuing trapped, lost or injured animals and investigating animal abuse complaints in the field.
• Issuing appropriate warning notices and citations and making court appearances.
• Keeping appropriate records and preparing reports.
• Returning animals to owners.
• Maintaining animal control equipment and maintaining surveillance over suspected animals confined to animal shelter.
• Cleaning shelter when needed.
• Assisting with walk-ins at the shelter, adoptions, and phone calls.
• All other duties as assigned.

  Typical qualifications include:

  • Minimum education and experience: high school diploma or GED and minimal experience in the care of animals, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Licenses and/or certifications: Baton, Firearms, Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) Spray, and Taser certifications within six months of hire. Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must meet and maintain all training and education requirements for position.
  • Knowledge: general knowledge of animal behaviors and of animal catching equipment; general knowledge of the laws, ordinances, and regulations governing the control of animals; general knowledge of City locations.
  • Skills: communication, investigation, and interviewing skills; animal trapping/catching skills.
  • Abilities: ability to operate a truck, to deal with the general public and to handle vicious and/or wild animals.

  Work environment includes exposure to outdoor weather conditions or extreme noise, odors, heights and/or dust and to wild or dangerous animals. Essential physical activities include stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, and depth perception. Typical weight handled: up to 100 lbs.
