The primary purpose of this position is to provide advanced technical services in installation and maintenance of hardware; and installation, upgrade, and maintenance of software; and provide network services in support of combat operations.

Duties

Help

  • Provides guidance and assistance to customers. Assists customers in the application of system capabilities when the customer has unusual or unique processing requirements that are difficult to formulate.
  • Installs and maintains hardware. Verifies that all equipment attachments and power support items are approved and are in compliance with existing regulations, directives, and vendor specifications.
  • Installs, upgrades, and maintains software. Performs system software control and library functions. Develops new and/or modified procedures for the operation of the software library and configuration management procedures.
  • Analyzes and determines cause of malfunctions related to hardware, software, or environment and initiates corrective action. Monitors, tests, maintains, and operates multiple operating systems-based network platforms.
  • Performs periodic or scheduled preventive maintenance for a variety of complex systems. Runs diagnostic and reliability tests and corrects conditions.
  • Performs administrative functions. Maintains inventory of computer supplies necessary to keep systems functioning smoothly.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Clerical and Administrative Support Positions.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-08 equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes utilizing an extensive body of standardized, optional, and precedent computer operations and problem-solving rules, procedures, techniques, and methods to operate computer systems and to isolate and resolve recurring problems in one or several computers' systems: Assisting customers in the application of system capabilities.

FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-08 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Knowledge of computer operating systems and associated equipment configurations, including peripheral and teleprocessing equipment and connecting channels; and computer operations and problem-solving rules, procedures, techniques, and methods.

2. Knowledge of system control language and terms for console commands.

3. Knowledge of communication and security regulations, guidelines, traffic flow, and procedures.

4. Knowledge of the appropriate environmental standards necessary for continuous computer operations.

5. Ability to operate a computer having many peripheral devices, and isolate and resolve computer-processing problems.

6. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Additional Conditions of Employment:
  • This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the AirForce, national security, and public safety.
  • Information Assurance (IA) Certification is a condition of employment. Information assurance (IA) work is a paramount duty requirement per DoD 8570 01-M and the incumbent of this position must hold the appropriate IA certification prior to employment. Position requires DoD IAT Level II or higher baseline certification (CySA+, Security+, GSEC, SSCP, CCNA Security). Failure to receive the proper IA certification and maintain currency may result in removal from this position.
